The alumni reunions this year were extra special for all of us. Not only did we begin this year’s reunions with the pioneering class of MUWCI, but we also enjoyed the good company of the founding head of college, Dr. David Wilkinson. We will soon be able to watch David in conversation with our current Head of College, Gaurav Chopra.
It was two weekends of whole-hearted fun, laughter, and touching moments filled with love, nostalgia, a deep concern for the state of education, and the place of UWC schools and colleges in an increasingly competitive world. One of the most memorable remarks from an alum was “MUWCI helped us discover ourselves”, when the rest of the world was primarily interested in telling us who we are and who we ought to be. MUWCI helped them learn more about themselves, build meaningful relations with their classmates and teachers, and find their true purpose.
Alumni trekked up Internet Hill, dined in the cafeteria and wadas, stayed in their wada rooms, toured the campus, and engaged in intense discussions during the Circle of Life sessions, to rediscover their connection with this place and the UWC movement. The Circle of Life sessions were particularly revealing, as everyone freely shared their memories from their time at MUWCI and their current views on the state of education in the world, the IB curriculum, the role of parents, and, of course, the vast difference a good school and college education can make.
One thing was clear from the moment alumni met and greeted one another: They weren’t seeing or hearing from each other for the first time in the last 25 years. They have been in touch. They still speak on the phone, stay at each other’s homes, and lend a helping hand when needed. These friendships they built were not temporary. These are lifelong connections they hold dear and cherish.
We were delighted to have so many alumni visit the campus with their families. May these connections take us far and benefit the lives of many more students across the globe who deserve to study at one of the world’s best international colleges, which truly values the transformative power of a good education.
